Heathrow’s reputation in tailspin

The weekend’s media has been crammed with reports on Terminal 5′s atrocious start. Borkowski eloquently dissects BA’s immediate reaction  - which for the most part I agree with, save that I would have liked a more open and honest answer straight away rather than fudging along for over 24 hours.

However, a couple of things have struck me since – not least Friday’s Economist (subscription only), which included three large features on Heathrow airport, looking forward to the opening of T5 as a new dawn for the blighted airport. Demonstrating in the clearest terms the pitfalls of being a weekly title in a world of 24-hour media the articles still had resonance – highlighting Britain’s continued inability to grasp the transport infrastructure nettle or with sufficient gusto as to deliver a decent system. It’s brilliant to read how, moving into his 4th decade of being a serial entrepreneur, Richard Branson’s new life goal is to reduce carbon emissions. Drawing inspiration from champions such as Al Gore, Jonathan Porritt and Tim Flannery, Virgin has pledged to leave no stone unturned to seek our ways of adopting a more organic and holistic approach to business.

On closer examination of what has driven Branson as he has built up global empires, the words tenacity and determination spring to mind. Epitomising the tenet ‘Just do it’ he regards life and business as a continuous journey of learning. A great advocate of not holding back and possessing great self-belief, he motivates with the following pearls: Believe it can be done

Have goals

Live life to the full

Never give up

Prepare well

Have faith in yourself

Try and try again

Help each other

Have a wonderful week ahead!

Today has been one of the busiest news days for quite some time. The ongoing situation with Shannon Matthews has jostled with the Mills McCartney divorce, the worsening global credit crunch as well as political troubles in Tibet.

The Quest team has been involved fully in the media scrum ensuring national and international coverage for one client, while fielding calls for another who’s recorded a major victory for one of his clients.

gossip cartoonHaving spent a delightful weekend in Paris, it gave me the opportunity to catch up on reading (tip: Small Island by Andrea Levy). Devouring this week’s Media Guardian highlighted several interesting articles – two covered the rise (and rise) in importance of PR versus advertising, which Richard Bailey has written about, and the falling circulations of local newspapers.

While not totally universal, it’s clear that like most other daily newspapers fewer of us read our local and regional newspapers. However, what the article went on to say was that when big issues hit a particular region, city or town, we turn to our local journalists whom we trust to tell the story impartially and honestly. It cited the example of Mansfield’s paper following last week’s earthquake – and I should expect something similar is happening in Dewsbury following the worrying disappearance of Shannon Matthews. The report also said that more and more newspapers are turning ultra local to offer themselves as community sites – certainly the Yorkshire Evening Post has started this process though hasn’t yet built one for my part of Leeds.
